I often wonder what it was like being an inventor at the turn of the 19th century. With so many things we take for granted today waiting to be created the life of a brainstormer must have been ridonkulous! Every blue (or pink) moon I have an idea for practical industry I think is worth it for the world to consider. Here is my list so far.

Kevlar Roofing

Building shingles out of Kevlar material means the roof will be much lighter while improving durability. Once the weight is reduced you’re ready to utilize insulated lumber.

Insulated Lumber

Lumber that is hollowed out in grooves through and through, then filled with lightweight insulation is perfect for homes with Kevlar roofing. Keeping down the weight is a big deal – then we can repurpose the same materials for the moon and Mars. A palette of them would be relatively light.

Nevada Space Elevator

A space elevator in the middle of the Nevada desert is the right idea for space infrastructure. The next Port of Oakland will be in the middle of nowhere where any spillage will simply fall on the sunny sand for safety. The mechanical problem we face right now is the carbon ribbon. It needs to be innovated for use far from the equator to avoid sway with the Earth. Then imagine the opportunity we will have one day. Run a pallet up the elevator. Once at the top, toss the cargo gently toward the space over the Gobi Desert in China. A magnetic arm catches the shipment and runs it back down the elevator. Across the Pacific in one hour or less!

Pop-up Dresser with TV Hanger

You’ve seen the high-end homes that showcase a TV rising up from a cabinet on actuators. Now think about a dresser built for apartment living in San Francisco or other cities were space is at a premium. A dresser with a press-down-pop-up top reveals multiple levels of shelving at arm’s height. The flat face of the dresser and light weight of wire or slotted shelving make it less expensive to ship. The slim front lip also pops-up to reveal a television backdrop that will hang a 50″ flatscreen in your bedroom. Great for spaces were there is limited room for pulling out shelves. The DIY version comes with bare wood and allows customers to purchase shoe polish style containers of poly-stain for an easy way to have just the right look that matches your present furniture.

Hydrogen Electrical Generator

For more information on this generator and some ideas for its use check out my blog post on Water: A Power Source (For Hydrogen).

Concert Venue Upgrades

Imagine concert videos with you and your date screaming from the screen. Customized videos that can be ordered before the show with your seating information will enable video souvenirs to be filmed on wire-mounted cameras programmed with your location.

For a taste of serenade at your seat, spotlight audio turrets attached to the lighting will scan the audience randomly to broadcast 4D sound into your head.

Vertical Farms

This idea was tested in New Jersey over a decade ago. I think now is the time to make them a reality in Las Vegas and other cities. Vertical farms are hydroponic farms that exist in a high-rise building. The benefits for a city such as Las Vegas are:

  • Ability to place farms close in to available hydroponic farm workers
  • Closed-ecosystem means water is recycled, bee population can be maintained without stress, resistant to GMO cross-polination and airborne viruses
  • Capable of growing varieties of fruits and vegetables from around the world without shipping or storage concerns
  • Puts downward price pressure on traditionally-grown organic foods
  • Harvest 9 times the amount of food per acre

In Las Vegas, the added benefit is the ability to stock casino restaurants with exotic foods. Vertical farms will also lessen the strain Nevada puts upon the California grow regions which are already under the stress of the lower throughput of the California Aqueduct.

Solid Filtration Dam

Think of gravity filtered water and you will know what I am talking about. i got this idea while thinkking about the California Aqueduct. Instead of a system that can harm fish when water is drained out of a dam, could we simply create a mesh that holds in sediment so that water is drawn through but not surrounding fish and other aquatic life? That could be the solution to the issue of the Delta Smelt crippling the California grow region.

Stackable Farm Aid

Taking the idea of vertical farming one step further, what if we were to outfit shipping containers with all of the necessary equipment for vertical farming. Then ship them to third world countries or disaster relief regions. Put them on railway wheels and deliver them to their needed sites. The ability to grow food as well as learn modern methods of hydroponic farming will be an innovation to shipping supplies without follow-up.

V-RFID Voting Ballots

Tear-out circles of the unrippable plastic used in some currency (such as Australia’s) with an RFID embedded will replace software voting machines. Benefits include ease of counting by the box, ease of transporting only a portion of the ballot, elimination of potential to hack voting software for real or perceived fraud. Anonymity is also restored.

Crowdsourced Movie Studio

Building on the success of sites like Kickstarter, a crowdsourced movie studio will help movies achieve funding by pairing traditional studios with people who are interested in getting into production of a blockbuster with only a $1-5 million investment. The general public can also contributefor the thrill of it. A new way to mitigate the risk of studios funding experimental projects and/or new directors.

Political Social Network

A closed network for elected officials and other government leaders that creates a web of nodes denoting in-person aquaintace, hierarchy and clearance that allows information to be sent to each member of the network from any other. This allows information to be passed through human filtering in order to eliminate unnecessary communication, improve the context of info with notes and attachments, allow timely delivery of messages that are outside of agenda and create an accountability path that is human verifiable. In times of crisis this network functions as a civilian chain-of-command.

Leg-strapped Mousepad

Rigid mousepad that can be strapped to the leg of a user for use when a flat surface cannot be found.

Automatic Steam Oven

Network connected steam oven that accepts prepared servings of branded fast food and other generic items. High-temperature steam cooks and moistens the food using precise time and temperature from the on-board cookbook. Oven searches for cookbook items automatically according to the indication on food packaging.

Movie Theater Delivery

Pizza delivery companies will expand to deliver branded movie theater items that can be scheduled in advance for movie night. Snacks, popcorn, drinks and the usual containers as well as items such as 3D glasses.

Jargon Compilers

Standard written or verbal English inputs are compiled like a programming language into industry-specific verbiage. Examples include a “Bill-Speak” version for Congressmen new to the language of law writing. Functional as a just-in-time workflow device and an ongoing tutoring application. Phrases of meaningful jargon can be associated with typical patterns of regional speech as the inputs from specific areas of the country become a means to awareness of dialects and colloquial speech for use in other language-oriented settings.

*- A database of speech differentiation and how colloquial speech changes in areas of our country over time would be an asset to related software to scan speeches of our federal officials for the potential to alienate or isolate areas of the country unknowingly by word choice alone.

Diamond Mining Claims (Africa)

By reflecting the American West into African countries that mine diamonds those nations can begin the process of building an upper and middle class of capitalist-minded business and industrial leaders. Allowing motivated miners to stake a claim to mining and eventual land ownership will spread prosperity out across the country while providing a well-maintained metaphor of proper business development to emerge.

Skinnable Cars

As auto fuel moves from gasoline to variable-temperature Watergas (HHO) powering electric generators the necessary components of repair will become generators and exterior/interior body of the automobile. Engines and structural forms will enjoy increased longevity as induction motors reduce the negative effects of strong magnetic field bursts and heat damage. Carbon-weave material that can be pulled across the frame like a fabric will allow consumers to replace the style of their vehicle regularly. Window and windshield openings will be custom cut. Durability and shatter-proof qualities of plastics will improve to replace the heaviness of glass while allowing for more curvature in their design. Uploading a design image to your local dealer will allow auto bodies to be “printed” on demand and installed within a few days.

Perpetual Upgrades

The notion of interchangeable parts will compliment improved durability and technological utility at a point where true modular design of computers, autos and homes may begin. Replacement of worn or dated components of structural value will become easier. Replacement of the aesthetic to please the artistry of the consumer becomes a regular and normal expectation. Recognition and agreement to optimal geometries by engineers will standardize footprint, placement and connectivity such that this level of modularization may exist.

Lifting up the cover of a laptop, for instance, will reveal easy-to-remove processors, memory and other vital components that are easily replaced to upgrade performance.Reflecting this modularization into programming philosophy will allow backwards and forward-compatibility with operating systems and software.

Lighter, cheaper and stronger building materials used in home construction in combination with architects that design with modularity of structure in mind will allow homeowners to replace the look of their homes several times without full tear-down. Consider the value of wall material that can be replaced as easily as carpeting or a kevlar roof that can be rolled back to allow an additional story to be added to an existing structure, then reapplied to the top of the new addition.

For city planners, modular design and infinite currency means invigorating the areas of a city that become vacant with intention alone. Relocate neighborhood hydrogen electric plants, remove dated and unwanted structures and replace them with exactly what an evolving community desires.
